If your face seems out of balance when you look in the mirror, perhaps your nose is the culprit. This central feature can have a profound impact on the overall harmony and proportion of your face. If it is too big, asymmetrical or misshapen in some way, it can throw your entire appearance off. Fortunately, a surgical procedure known as rhinoplasty or nose reshaping surgery can address these concerns, improving the appearance of your nose and enhancing your facial harmony at the same time.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to change the size, shape or profile of the nose. This procedure can be tailored by an experienced plastic surgeon to the unique needs and desired results of each patient. Rhinoplasty tends to have a high satisfaction rate among patients because it provides permanent results with a single procedure. It is also one of the most performed plastic surgery procedures today. In 2015 alone, nearly 218,000 rhinoplasties were performed on men and women in the United States.

Are you a candidate?

Rhinoplasty is a good procedure for anyone that is unhappy with the appearance or function of the nose. Some of the concerns that can be addressed with this procedure include:

  • A nose that is the wrong size for the rest of the face
  • A nose that is crooked or out of alignment due to injury or other reasons
  • A nasal bridge that has an unflattering contour
  • The nasal tip is too large, small, pointed or flat
  • Structures inside the nose make it difficult to breathe

Dr. Patel will discuss your specific concerns and expectations for the procedure at your initial consultation to determine whether rhinoplasty is the right procedure for you.

Non-Surgical Options

For some patients, surgery may not be the recommended first course of action. Non-surgical rhinoplasty involves the use of injectable dermal fillers to add fullness or even out asymmetries. These injections can be completed in just a few minutes in our office and produce results that may last many months. Some patients may decide after a non-surgical rhinoplasty to proceed with surgery that will give them similar results on a permanent basis.

Procedure Options

There are different techniques that can be used during rhinoplasty so that Dr. Patel can tailor your procedure to your specific concerns. Open rhinoplasty provides the best access to the nasal structures and greater precision in the correction process. While this approach requires a small external incision, it is always minimal and imperceptible after the surgery and recovery process is completed.

Closed rhinoplasty is another option that involves incisions on the inside of the nasal cavity. This approach tends to limit the amount of correction that can be done but does not involve any visible scarring afterward. For certain patients, the closed rhinoplasty can be the best option.

Recovery and Results

While there is often a significant amount of bruising and swelling after rhinoplasty, patients are typically pleasantly surprised at how quick and comfortable recovery from rhinoplasty can be. The first few days, oral pain medication is prescribed and instructions are given to minimize post-operative swelling. Most patients feel up to regular activities within a week and are feeling ready for social situations within two weeks.
